NC Angler Wins World Billfish Series' Grand Championships, Again
Raleigh lawyer Karl Knudsen knows billfish. He first won the World Billfish Series' Grand Championship and the title of the World Champion of Billfishing in 1998, last Saturday he did it again. Knudsen won his entry into the exclusive event earlier in Iztapa, Guatemala, where he beat four other World Billfish Series world champions in the Versus Tournament of Champions for $25,000 and an automatic berth in the championship. The championship was held off of Los Suenos, Costa Rica and Knudsen secured his victory by catching and releasing 8 sailfish - himself. This included even landing 2 sailfish simultaneously. The tournament format includes standardized tackle, random draws for crews and boats, and only one angler per boat. When the two sailfish hit at the same time, Knudsen alternated fighting them until he was able to bring both to the boat. For his skill Knudsen won a Mercedes C-230, the Grander Marlin custom bronze trophy by marine artist Geoffrey Smith and a custom gold champion's ring. More on NC's own World Champion is available from the News & Observer; more on the World Billfish Series and full tournament coverage is available from their website.
