NC DMF to Forward NC Watermen's License Exemption Request
In a 4-3 vote Thursday, the North Carolina Marine Fisheries Commission decided to forward, but not necessarily endorse, North Carolina Watermen United's license exemption request to the Joint Legislative Commission on Seafood and Aquaculture. Many commercial fishermen don't see the need for a saltwater recreational fishing license when they already hold commercial vessel registrations and view requiring both as a form of double jeopardy. Officials estimate the exemption would cost the state $187,000 in revenues, which several commission members thought was not a great loss considering the state estimates it will earn between $6 million and $8 million a year from the new saltwater license. More on the NC DMF vote is available from the Jacksonville Daily News.
