Onslow Bay Saltwater Fishing Club Plays Santa

OBSFC Donation; Photo courtesy of Tideland News OnlineIn a wonderful gesture of Christmas spirit, the Onslow Bay Salt Water Fishing Club has donated $5,000 of the proceeds from their king mackerel tournament to the Onslow Community Ministry Christmas Cheer program. The funds were used to purchase 126 bicycles and helmets for needy children in the area. The Onslow Bay King Mackerel Tournament is now in its sixth year and has made contributing to charities an annual tradition. Over the years recipients have included the Take a Kid Fishing Foundation, Miracle Meadows Therapeutic Riding Center which allows mentally impaired children to ride horses, Camp Sunshine which allows children with incurable diseases of various stages to enjoy summer camp, and several other great organizations too numerous to list. We like to commend the Onslow Bay Salt Water Fishing Club and encourage everyone to fish their outstanding king tournament next year. More on the donation is available from the Tideland News Online and the photo used here is courtesy of their website.

Last Minute Christmas Shopping

Christmas BowWith Christmas quickly approaching we're sure we aren't the only ones looking for those last minute gifts. There are still a few days left for ordering online with either 2-3 day shipping or overnight shipping so we thought we'd share some deals we've come across this week. First, Boaters World is offering up to 40% OFF at BoatersWorld.com Using Google Checkout's $20 Off $50 Promotion and Cabela's is offering $20 off merchandise orders over $150. Another great resource is www.slickdeals.net - they track promotions and rebates for just about every type of product you can think of. Good luck with those last minute preparations.

NC Angler Wins World Billfish Series' Grand Championships, Again

Raleigh lawyer Karl Knudsen knows billfish. He first won the World Billfish Series' Grand Championship and the title of the World Champion of Billfishing in 1998, last Saturday he did it again. Knudsen won his entry into the exclusive event earlier in Iztapa, Guatemala, where he beat four other World Billfish Series world champions in the Versus Tournament of Champions for $25,000 and an automatic berth in the championship. The championship was held off of Los Suenos, Costa Rica and Knudsen secured his victory by catching and releasing 8 sailfish - himself. This included even landing 2 sailfish simultaneously. The tournament format includes standardized tackle, random draws for crews and boats, and only one angler per boat. When the two sailfish hit at the same time, Knudsen alternated fighting them until he was able to bring both to the boat. For his skill Knudsen won a Mercedes C-230, the Grander Marlin custom bronze trophy by marine artist Geoffrey Smith and a custom gold champion's ring. More on NC's own World Champion is available from the News & Observer; more on the World Billfish Series and full tournament coverage is available from their website.

Bluefin Tuna Behind Emerald Isle

Bluefin Tuna; Link to articleGreg Dennis, owner of Reel Outdoors Tackle Shop in Emerald Isle, and his neighbor Hugh Sutton landed what has to be one of the most bizarre catches we've ever heard of. A few weeks ago they were in their backyards along Archer's Creek on the sound side of Emerald Isle when a large fish was spotted swimming in the shallow creek. The two hopped on board Dennis' 16-foot Carolina Skiff and began following the large wake trying to identify the fish. After spotting a forked tail and ensuring it wasn't either a red drum or stripper they were able to foul hook and then gaff it. After bringing the 76.5 inch monster into the boat they realized they had just caught a bluefin tuna. Federal law requires boats landing bluefin tuna to have permits and imposes a pretty stiff fine on violators, Dennis is currently facing a civil penalty that could range up to a few grand. More on the Archer's Creek bluefin tuna is available from the Jacksonville Daily News.

Surf Fishing Videos

Over the last few weeks we've been spending more and more time playing with YouTube and have really enjoyed browsing through their videos. A good number of fishermen have also started uploading their videos as well and we found a few we wanted to share.

The first comes from our friends over at pierandsurf.com and is 4 minutes of surf fishing in the Sandbridge area of Virginia. They start with a few garbage catches but finish with a beautiful bull red that is well over the slot limit.

The next video is about 5 minutes of surf fishing from Cape Hatteras. We've been asked a lot of questions over the last year about surf fishing on Hatteras - this video does a better job of conveying the experience than words can describe.

Our buddies over at fishmilitia.com wanted to test the strength of a new composite surf casting rod and had the bright idea of trying to cast a 4 lb. brick...

If you haven't had a chance to browse YouTube you'd really be surprised how many folks are uploading great catches, techniques and other fishing videos. We hope to start filming and sharing some of our adventures and misadventures next year and hope you do as well. Be sure to leave a link in the comments if you find a great fishing video we may have missed or if you've added one of your own.

NC DMF to Forward NC Watermen's License Exemption Request

North Carolina Watermen UnitedIn a 4-3 vote Thursday, the North Carolina Marine Fisheries Commission decided to forward, but not necessarily endorse, North Carolina Watermen United's license exemption request to the Joint Legislative Commission on Seafood and Aquaculture. Many commercial fishermen don't see the need for a saltwater recreational fishing license when they already hold commercial vessel registrations and view requiring both as a form of double jeopardy. Officials estimate the exemption would cost the state $187,000 in revenues, which several commission members thought was not a great loss considering the state estimates it will earn between $6 million and $8 million a year from the new saltwater license. More on the NC DMF vote is available from the Jacksonville Daily News.

Hatteras Awash With Doritos

DoritosAnyone surf fishing on Hatteras Island last week was in for a nice surprise as thousands of bags of Doritos washed ashore. The massive Nor' Easter that blew through in late November washed four shipping containers off the ship Courtney L as it sailed somewhere near the Virginia-North Carolina line. Three of the containers have not been located, but the fourth was reported floating off Diamond Shoals last Wednesday. In the long standing tradition of maritime salvage, charter boat captains opened the container and found 400 3-foot by 4-foot boxes of Doritos, each holding about 20 individual bags - that's 8,000 bags of Doritos. As the bags later washed out of the container, they began showing up in the surf all along the shoreline where fishermen and locals gathered the sea's unusual bounty. More on the Doritos is available from the Wilmington Star.
