Emerald Isle, NC History
First settled by the Algonquin Indian tribe around 500 A.D., Emerald Isle later became home to fishermen and whalers begining in the 1700's. What is today known as Emerald Isle only began in the 1950's. The southernmost 13 miles of Bogue Banks was purchased by a group of seven developers in 1951 from Mrs. Anita Fort Maulik of Philadelphia for the then record sum of $350,000. The name "Emerald Isle" was coined by a consultant hired by the seven developers. The story has it that while flying over the undeveloped land, he looked down on the beautiful and lush island and surrounding crystal seas and proclaimed, "This Place Shall be Known as Emerald Isle".
